About the Artist

Jesse Powell became enraptured by oil painting in his youth. A third generation artist, Jesse accredits most of his art education and self-discipline to his father, John, whom Jesse constantly observed and admired as a young child. Jesse attended the University of Puget Sound (Bachelor of Arts) but views the intensive art and cultural education that he received at the King Erekle School of the Arts in The Republic of Georgia as having the most influence on his traditional, impressionist style and his love for plein air work. Jesse continues to expand his training with various workshops at the Scottsdale Artists’ School, under the instruction of such prominent contemporary artists as Matt Smith, Kenn Backhaus, George Strickland and Dan Goozee.

Jesse’s greatest artistic love is landscape painting. He is inspired by California Impressionists Guy Rose, Edgar Payne and William Wendt and by the great works of early American and Russian Impressionists. Jesse predominantly paints en plein air, and appreciates the challenge of the ever-changing light and the shapes of the natural Southern California and Southwestern terrains.

Jesse is a signature member of the Laguna Plein Air Painter’s Association. He was awarded first prize in the 2003 LPAPA Member’s Show, honorable mention in the 2004 LPAPA Member’s Show and first prize at the the Crystal Cove Alliance Invitational in 2003, an event that was judged by Jean Stern, director and curator of the Irvine Museum. Jesse has also participated in the Laguna Beach Plein Air Invitational for the past two years. Most recently, He has been named one of Southwest Art Magazine’s “21 under 31 Young Artists to Collect Now” (September, 2004).

Born in 1977 in Los Angeles, Jesse resides in Southern California. His work can be seen at Michael Hollis Fine art in Pasadena, California or at George Stern Fine Arts in Carmel, California.
